Eight miners trapped over a kilometre underground in a South African gold mine have been rescued. Emergency workers battled a through smoke and rubble to reach the workers and bring them to the surface. <br /><br />An earthquake broke ventilation and water pipes and damaged power cables which caused a fire to break out deep underground.<br /><br />Nine employees remain unaccounted for at Harmony Gold’s Doornkop mine near Johannesberg. Rescuers are working to find the nine alive.<br /><br />South African gold mines are the deepest and some of the most dangerous in the world.<br /><br />Five years ago, more than 80 suspected illegal workers died after an underground fire at a Harmony mine. Most of the victims suffocated.
