Shelters built for stray dogs in Sochi

Following an outcry over the fate of stray dogs in Sochi, local authorities have built makeshift shelters to try and combat the problem.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) OLGA SADOVSKAY, ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST, SAYING:<br/> <br />"I think it is good, that this subject is being discussed again and that the mayor decided to solve it.<br/> <br />The shelters are an attempt to counter accusations from animal activists that stray dogs are being killed to produce a spotless image of Olympic venues.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) SONIA TURPIETKINA, VETERINARIAN AND DOG SHELTER VOLUNTEER SAYING:<br/> <br />"The poisoning is going on... yes. I keep seeing poisoned bait. This is repulsive, they are dying in horrible pain."<br/> <br />"You don't see what's going on here? My sister wrote to me that she saw piles of dog bodies."<br/> <br />This new shelter houses about forty dogs, a tiny percentage of the thousands of animals around the city.
