It was the first royal engagement of the year for the Duchess of Cambridge -- visiting the National Portrait Gallery in London for its annual gala.<br/> <br />Catherine, who is a patron of the gallery, wore a diamond necklace borrowed from the Queen for the occasion.<br/> <br />In her speech she paid tribute to its work and achievements.<br/> <br />SOUNDBITE: Duchess of Cambridge saying (English):<br/> <br />"The Gallery's achievements are exceptional. They hold the most extensive collection of portraits in the world, and their unique and brilliant exhibitions never fail to inspire us all."<br/> <br />Funds raised at the gala will help the gallery with the acquisition of portraits of outstanding national importance - that now includes a painting of the Duchess hanging next to that of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
