Ukrainian opposition accepts compromise deal to end protests

2014-02-21 24 Dailymotion

The Ukrainian opposition has agreed to the compromise deal proposed by President Viktor Yanukovych after intense mediation from a group of EU foreign ministers between the government, opposition and Maidan leaders.

It may herald an end to the crisis in Kyiv and elsewhere around the country.

While it satisfies none of the protagonists 100% of their demands it does at least offer the promise of an end to the recent violence.

The deal will mean an immediate reversion to the 2004 constitution, limiting the president’s powers, the setting up of a coalition government, and presidential elections brought forward from 2015.

The first tangible evidence on the streets that a step back was being taken was the police leaving Independence square, the centre of the Maidan protests.
