Originally published on December 12, 2013 <br /><br />An attacker hurled a hand grenade at British tourists on Thursday in Kenya's main port city of Mombasa, but it failed to explode.<br /><br />According to reports, the tourists left the Indian Ocean resort of Diani on a van, heading to the Masai Mara national park for a safari.<br /><br />They were in Mombasa's Likoni district when a man threw a grenade at their vehicle and then fled the scene. The grenade hit the vehicle's window, but failed to explode, Sky News reported.<br /><br />It was later detonated safely by experts.<br /><br />The British High Commission in Kenya has said it has launched an investigation into the incident and local police are currently looking for a suspect.<br /><br />"We are investigating the incident and looking for the man who threw the grenade at the tourists and fled," Mombasa's police chief Robert Kitur told the AFP.<br /><br />Kenya has seen a wave of grenade attacks since it invaded southern Somalia in October 2011 to try to oust al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab insurgents, Sky News reported. <br /><br />Restaurants in Mombasa as well as crowded areas in Nairobi and the northeast region of the country bordering with Somalia have been target areas for the insurgents.<br /><br />Al Shabaab is a Somali Islamist organization who claimed responsibility for the assault on Nairobi's Westgate mall in September, in which 67 people died during a four-day siege. <br /><br />--------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
