An Egyptian court has sentenced 529 members of the Muslim Brotherhood to death.<br /><br />Lawyers said it’s the biggest mass death sentence in Egypt’s modern history.<br /><br />Most of the defendants at Monday’s hearing were detained in August during clashes in the southern province of Minya. <br /><br />The clashes came after two Muslim Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo were violently dispersed.<br /><br />The charges against the group include violence, inciting murder and storming a police station.<br /><br />Turmoil has deepened since the army overthrew Egyptian president, Mohamed Mursi of the Brotherhood, in July. <br /><br />A security crackdown has devastated the Brotherhood. The government has declared it a “terrorist” group. The Brotherhood says it is committed to peaceful activism.
