Politicians and the public pay their respects to Adolfo Suarez in Congress

Politicians and citizens came together on Monday in commemoration of the man regarded as modern Spain’s founding father, former Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez. .<br /><br />Three surviving ex-premiers were in attendance as Suarez’s coffin was received in Congress by state authorities. <br /><br />King Juan Carlos and his wife were also present.<br /><br />Adolfo Suarez died on Sunday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.<br /><br />Family members mixed with some of Spain’s leading political figures to pay tribute. <br /><br />With opinion polls rating him as the country’s most respected politician, members of the public were also keen to acknowledge his passing.<br /><br />Suarez is credited with steering Spain through to democracy and building bridges between disparate political factions following the end of fascism under dictator General Franco in 1975. <br /><br />Thousands queued outside Congress as Spain began three days of official mourning to mark his death.
