Taliban gunmen attacked the main Afghan election commission’s headquarters in Kabul on Saturday.<br /><br />The militants had taken over an empty house outside the compound and fired on it with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns.<br /><br />Staff took refuge in safe rooms while security forces battled the militants, killing all four of them.<br /><br />The owner of the house, Haji Mohebullah, described what happened: “Four suicide bombers entered my house. I had three guards, two outside and one inside but I don’t know what is happening right now. The attackers were wearing women’s burqas.”<br /><br />Security had already had been stepped up around the compound ahead of next week’s presidential election.<br /><br />It’s the third big assault on the Afghan capital this week.
