Originally published on November 12, 2013<br /><br />Cambodian police arrested Russian tycoon Sergei Polonsky on Monday morning and plan to extradite him to his country of origin to face embezzlement charges.<br /><br />According to reports, he was detained at the request of Russian authorities. <br /><br />The beachfront police raid started at around 6 a.m., Cambodian time. <br /><br />Dozens of police officers arrived at the island owned by the tycoon, located about 4 kilometres off the shores of Sihanoukville, on three motor launches.<br /><br />At the sight of the police, Polonsky plunged into the water and swam to the mainland. <br /><br />The Russian state news agency Itar-Tass quoted a Cambodian interior ministry spokesman as saying that Polonsky escaped through the jungle and tried to hide there. <br /><br />Police hunted the tycoon for hours. According to the Daily Telegraph, they managed to capture him only after officers opened fire. <br /><br />After he was captured, television footage from the scene showed a scratched and bruised Polonsky, naked apart from a red towel around his waist, escorted by security forces, the Telegraph reported. <br /><br />"I don't know, I was resting, but maybe I ran, I don't know I need a lawyer," Polonsky told Russian television on the scene.<br /><br />The request for his extradition was submitted to Cambodian authorities last week after Polonsky was charged in absentia in June with fraud, for embezzling 5.7 billion rubles (US$174 million) from a luxury property development project. <br /><br />Polonsky had recently been released on bail after he was arrested in December 2012 by Cambodian authorities on allegations that he took six seamen hostage while drunk. <br /><br />He has been living in Cambodia ever since.<br /><br />--------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
