At least two people were killed and 80 homes destroyed or damaged after flood water was released from the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam in Pahang, Malaysia, according to The Star newspaper.

At just before 1am on Wednesday, rising waters forced operators of the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam to manually open floodgates. This sent water rushing down to nearby farms in Ringlet.

At around midnight, a siren sounded to warn residents about the pending release of floodwater. But it is believed that many residents didn't hear the warning, due to the rain.

Ten houses were destroyed in the flooding and about 70 were damaged. A Bangladeshi man and an Indonesian woman drowned, while a third man died from heart attack. Several more residents are unaccounted for.

The Star reported the flood water needed to be released to prevent the dam from 'bursting' following continuous rain 7pm the night before.

--------------------------------------------------------

TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
