Algeria: President Bouteflika sworn in for another five years

Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been sworn in for another five-year term in office.<br /><br />State television showed the president sitting in a wheelchair taking the oath, followed was a brief statement thanking the Algerian people for their renewed confidence. <br /><br />“I thank the Algerian people for their renewed confidence,” Bouteflika said in a weak voice. “The April 17 election was a victory for democracy. It was a lesson in democracy.”<br /><br />It was one of his rare public appearances since suffering a stroke last year.<br /><br />The ailing veteran politician, who has been in power for 15 years, was re-elected for a fourth term with 80 percent of the vote, but the main opposition claims the poll was rigged.<br /><br />Many of his critics have raised questions about his ability to govern. <br /><br />Some have said said he’s not fit to lead the country for another five years.
