Ukraine vote credibility questioned

In the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk there's a celebratory mood among some a day after a referendum on self-rule.<br /> <br />Pro-Moscow separatists are insisting what they call the People's Republic of Donetsk is now an independent state.<br /> <br />That view isn't shared in Kiev or further afield.<br /> <br />The U.S. says it doesn't recognise the referendum results.<br /> <br />(SOUNDBITE)(English) WHITE HOUSE SPOKESMAN JAY CARNEY SAYING:<br /> <br />"The so-called referendum to which you refer are illegal under Ukrainian law and a transparent attempt to create further division and disorder."<br /> <br />The European Council's president echoed that sentiment.<br /> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL, HERMAN VAN ROMPUY, SAYING:<br /> <br />"We will not recognise the annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol likewise we do not recognise so-called referendum of yesterday."<br /> <br />Britain's Foreign Secretary was scathing about the credibility of the poll.<br /> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (English) BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY
