Former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert sentenced to six years in jail for accepting bribes

Israel’s former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been sentenced to six years in jail by a court in Tel Aviv for his role in the Holyland corruption case.<br /><br />Ten individuals have been convicted in the process that involves bribery in the development of a controversial residential project in Jerusalem. <br /><br />Olmert is one of three found guilty of accepting bribes.<br /><br />The former prime minister pocketed the equivalent of 105,000 euros while mayor of Jerusalem.<br /><br />His defence team called on Judge David Rozen to hand down a community service sentence.<br /><br />Rozen declined saying such a punishment is not acceptable in the Holyland case.<br /><br />In a statement after the verdict Olmert said, “I never asked or received a bribe, neither directly or indirectly, not for myself or those close to me or my relatives.”<br /><br />Olmert is set to appeal.<br /><br />He is the latest in a long list of elected officials to be convicted of corruption.
