In South Africa, around a thousand stick-wielding strikers are continuing a protest that has stopped production at Lonmin’s Marikana platinum mine in a dispute over pay. <br /><br />Some of the protesters told reporters they were there to block anyone from reaching the shafts, as some rival mineworkers wanted to return to work. <br /><br />The stoppage, now in its 16th week, is legal but has become increasingly violent with intimidation on the rise.<br /><br />Four people have been murdered around the site in the last week, but no arrests have been made.<br /><br />Two years ago, police shot dead 34 striking Lonmin miners during a violent, wildcat strike.
