Wildfires menace southern California, thousands evacuated

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)<br /> <br />Wildfires raged across southern California on Thursday (May 15), keeping thousands of San Diego county residents away from their homes.<br /> <br />California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency.<br /> <br />"These big black plumes of smoke just seemed to come out of nowhere. It was nowhere near us and then it was there," said an unidentified California resident.<br /> <br />Nine wildfires, which broke out on Wednesday (May 14), have so far scorched more than 9,000 acres.<br /> <br />Emergency shelters have been set up at schools and community centers.<br /> <br />"You leave your house - I get the chills thinking about it - thinking, I hope I see it when I come back," said another unidentified California resident.<br /> <br />A blaze in San Marcos prompted officials to issue evacuation notices for thousands of residents and students at a California State University campus.<br /> <br />The university, which has more than 9,000 students, said on Thursday its evacuation
