Police in Turkey fired teargas and used water cannon to disperse protesters marking the one-year anniversary of the start of the country’s deadly anti-government demonstrations.<br /><br />In Istanbul around 25,000 police were deployed in Taksim Square at the centre of the 2013 rallies.<br /><br />Several thousand people gathered near to the square, shouting for the government to step down, but fled when authorities opened fire.<br /><br />Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had earlier urged people not to join in the protests.
