Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish prime minister, has announced during a press conference that Juan Carlos, king of Spain, has abdicate. <br /><br />The prime minister said that the Crown Prince Felipe will take over the throne.<br /><br />Rajoy also said a new constitutional amendment will be proposed to allow abdication.<br /><br />“His majesty, King Juan Carlos, has just communicated to me his will to give up the throne,“ Rajoy announced, “I’m convinced this is the best moment for change.”<br /><br />The king’s daughter, Princess Cristina, and her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, are under investigation in a corruption case, Reuters reports. <br /><br />The king, whose health is failing and has had a number of hip operations in recent years, is stepping down for personal reasons, Rajoy said.<br /><br />(with Reuters)
