French police have arrested four people on suspicion of recruiting militants to fight in Syria.

The raids, which took place in the Paris region and in southern France, came a day after it emerged that a Frenchman was being held by police investigating the killing of at least three people at a Jewish museum in Brussels.

France’s Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told reporters: “The combat, the battle against terrorists will take place in France, but also everywhere in Europe. Without respite or pause. We will do it by mobilising all our services.”

Mehdi Nemmouche, 29, was detained in relation to the Brussels museum attack following a random check in Marseilles on Friday, May 30. He is believed to have recently returned from fighting with Islamist insurgents in Syria.

There has been no suggestion of a direct link between Nemmouche’s detention and the four new arrests.
