There's a hole in me
when you're not around.
It aches and it throbs,
and temporarily robs
me of happiness
until I'm in your arms.
And I suspect
I expect
far too much of you at times.
That the border between you
and perfection, to me,
is often too narrow a line.
And it is often that you disappoint me,
with what you don't say
and what you don't do.
Except how could you possibly know?
There's a tear
in my heart.
It's not your fault,
I know,
but when you're gone,
it frays and it wears.
And soon it becomes
a hole.
When you're here, it's still there.
It knows better
than to seal itself shut.
It's prepared for the times when
you leave again,
and it opens up into a flood.
I'm aware
it's unfair to assume that
with one kiss you'd have it repaired.
That those perfect words,
if you only knew what they were,
could settle
this restless girl.
What I understand now
is this;
you don't know how to make up for
the time that we've missed.
And even if we spent hours,
staring back at each other,
with quietly, chastely closed lips,
it's proximity
that makes all the difference.
What you say, what you do
Whether or not you want to
hold me all through the night;
I'm just happy to be around you.
And while this hole inside me
hasn't killed me,
it also won't heal
'til you're here.
So take your time
but,
hurry up.
Don't forget, this is love
and while I'm well aware of
your position,
this hole inside me
gets bigger each day
and it's a serious,
life-threatening condition.

Violet Winters

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/hole-15/
