In Lincoln park so stately
Stands a monument today,
A memorial to a great man
A great man in his day. When Abraham was a boy
Back in his youthful life,
He was much the same as lads today
He knew hardships and strife. He was patient, kind, and tolerant
Full of his jokes and fun,
Generous and good humored
Much as the average run.
He searched his books for knowledge
For companionship, sometimes yearned,
For his honesty, he was famous
So, if you've read, you learned.

Every park needs an example
Of faith in ideals to show,
Of some cherished esteemed citizen
As Honest Abe of long ago.

Della Hodgson James

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/lincoln-6/
