On the eve of Independence day <br />She was selling flags on the road <br />Very dark in complexion <br />At the edge of starvation <br />A single dirty and tattered saree <br />She wore to cover her body and soul <br />And her unwashed hair <br />Was looking as bird's nest <br />She was homeless and foodless <br />She did not put any flag on ground <br />They were in her hands <br />Perhaps she knew how to respect our national flag <br />A little nude baby in her arms <br />Sucking milk from her dry breasts <br />Another was holding some flags <br />And shouting ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai'.<br /><br />Dr. P.
