it has been forgotten throughout the years.
people have shunned it because it causes tears.

all too soon it was considered wrong,
and people were told never again to long.

in places such as this it was considered a disgrace.
no more comfort or kisses or touching in any place.

and those of us who disobey the law,
are laughed at and made fun of only because we saw,

happiness in being with someone else,
in smiling together and finding the other half of ourselves.

'it's wrong! don't do it! remember the rules! '
shouted parents and teachers and friends from school.

but we just smirked and forgot them because they could never know
what happiness we had and they could never show.

and now twenty years later, when it's all over and done,
they're telling people what we started, what we begun.

they still tell us it's wrong and that it's a lie,
but no longer do we care, no longer do we cry.

we know they're the ones lying and that's the truth,
because they'll never love one another like i love you.

Annie Ortiz

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/it-has-been-forgotten/
