When I'm alone and it is dark, <br />I find I've made a choice; <br />To be as silent as I can- <br />Lest it recognize my voice. <br /> <br />Sometimes I feel a presence <br />Waiting in black of night, <br />I feel that it is stalking me- <br />And knows not wrong from right. <br /> <br />I don't want to make a sound, <br />Less it hone in on my heat; <br />Or maybe read my louder thoughts- <br />Which for monsters, is no feat. <br /> <br />The slightest sound I make then <br />Will always give me pause- <br />For the monster may have heard it- <br />And he has horns, teeth and claws. <br /> <br />I've no doubt he's got those very things, <br />In the deepest brooding night, <br />So I make a smaller target <br />Until the morning's light. <br /> <br />It works for me, this method; <br />You'd be smart to try it too: <br />Be silent in the darkness, <br />So the monsters won’t find you. <br /> <br />(and never, ever lean over to look under the bed!)<br /><br />Patti Masterman<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/when-i-m-alone-7/
