Love is a rising sun, <br />Gleaming on golden sand, <br />And death is a smoking gun, <br />A cold and blood-soaked hand, <br />And on the edge of oblivion <br />We fearful creatures stand, <br />Playing games for fun, <br />As the sun sets o’er the land. <br /> <br />Tomorrow we bring bread, <br />And fruits from far and wide, <br />To honor all the dead, <br />And those who have not died— <br />We feast, then go to bed, <br />And from the beast we hide, <br />Hanging by a thread, <br />Swaying side to side. <br /> <br />Wedding bells are ringing! <br />A joyous day has come! <br />A choir of angels is singing! <br />A child sucks its thumb! <br />And generous ones are bringing <br />Seasoned meat and rum, <br />Then back to the beginning <br />We saunter, drunk and dumb. <br /> <br />This life is filled with wonder, <br />This life is rife with pain, <br />Some nights have lightning, thunder, <br />Some nights have light, soft rain, <br />Some days we stumble, blunder, <br />Some days we harvest grain, <br />When wheat from chaff we sunder, <br />So that we may sustain. <br /> <br />Another ship is sailing <br />Across the brazen sea, <br />A vessel meant for whaling, <br />And new discovery— <br />But it was unavailing, <br />Lost to catastrophe, <br />And now I’m done regaling, <br />And plead you leave me be.<br /><br />Joshua Dinkin<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/leave-me-be-18/
