I talked to myself only yesterday, <br />we spoke of many things, <br />times of happiness and sorrow now gone forever, <br />he told me about the time he fell in love <br />and of the sadness that came and stole his dreams. <br /> <br />He told me once he met a girl so lovely and fair, <br />her parents disliked him and kept them apart, <br />and yet the strange part was that they'd never met him, <br />their decision was based on face value alone, <br />it really is ridiculous to find such people in this world, <br />they judge the case before the trial begins. <br /> <br />Strange that I talked to him only yesterday, <br />and now he is gone forever, <br />how sad the life cut off in mid-stream, <br />especially when the life belonged to one so kind, <br />yet no one gave him credit or recognised his nature, <br />they all thought humanity to be dead. <br /> <br />I talked to myself only yesterday, <br />we laughed about old times, <br />how can such a travesty of life be permitted, <br />he lay dead in the ashes of broken dreams, <br />but from the ashes it is said a Phoenix must rise, <br />and I know sometime, somewhere in the future, <br />a new self is already taking shape, <br />for such compassion will never be wholly killed, <br />there is always another to take his place, <br />and then another and again another, <br />so that before predators can cast hatred <br />and death on the land, <br />these brave new men of Phoenix will rise <br />to destroy them and all their kind.<br /><br />Richard Allen Beevor<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/it-was-only-yesterday-2/
