I am a gypsy
Fleeing from town to town to ply my magical trade
Never revealing too much
But always enough to leave you thinking me
Enchanting, beguiling, provocative, not quite good
Dangerous and misunderstood
My secrets are my own to keep
My past does seek rest in unquiet dreams
Through the night in which I shroud my intent
I am a gypsy

I am a troubadour
Moving from place to place to sing my words
Never planting deep roots
But always skirting disputes that I start without ending
Lyrical, whimsical, fanciful, purposeful
Mysterious and lonely
My words I mete out to the cheers of women
Whose smiles I cherish and whose touch is gold
I am a troubadour

I am a cowboy
Riding across the windblown hills in search of a dream
Never grasping it before it is swept away
But always in search of the next dollar, the next horizon
Yearning, hurting, aspiring, losing
Reticent and contemplative
My tomorrow is filled with running from yesterday’s pain
Which I leave not in the past
I am a cowboy

I am the samurai
Plying the martial nature of my skills to uphold an ideal
Never quite attaining it yet always in pursuit
But always my face staring back in taciturn reflection
Planning, preparing, guiding, avoiding
Confronting and unafraid
My weapons sheathed sharp in the hopes I will need them not
Yet even now my hand is gripped at the ready
I am the samurai

I am but a man
Rising each day to an unkind world in which I must succeed
Never yet who I set out to become
Hoping, working, trying, striving
Scared but loving you from deep in my shallow soul
My yearning heart knows all I could give may never be enough
Yet still I will commit all I have to your heart
I am but one man

DAVID TERRY

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/i-am-but-a-man-2/
