'Twas the night after Christmas when all through the store
Toys and candy were scattered all over the floor
Trash and all kinds of stuff was piled in a heap
With hopes that the trash truck would soon come with a beep
Mamma grabbed a mop while I searched for a broom
We wanted to clean up this mess really soon
When out on the sidewalk there arose such a clatter
That I fell on my butt and was hit by a ladder
Then what to my sore sleepy eyes should appear
A trash truck broke the plate glass backed in from the rear
A chubby little driver with a wild look in his eye
Mamma and I held onto each other we wanted to cry
Like glass before a wild hurricane fly
Backing and crunching over it he busted a tire
Then in a moment I heard angry cries with reproof
I think I busted my lip and broken my tooth
Then a I arose off my butt and was turning around
Down the aisle the angry trash man came with a bound
His clothes were all greasy from his foot to his head
But when he smiled then I knew that I had nothing to dread
The stinking cigar that he held tight in his teeth
Filled the room with an odor that smelled like burnt beef
He had a big round belly and long stringy hair
Then he simply stated I made a wrong turn somewhere
He smiled with apologies and said I'll do my best
To sweep and mop and clean up all this mess
He said nothing more but went straight to his work
Then filling the trash truck he turned with a jerk
With his finger on his nose and scratching his butt
Then taking a leap he landed flat on the seat of the truck
As he drove out of sight we heard him exclaim loud and clear
I am glad that Christmas only comes one time a year

Bobby Marbles Mobley

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/night-after-christmas/
