I stopped watching for Lady La Poste <br />Late last week; <br />Finally gave up waiting <br />For the belated, promised greeting <br />Just this minute, as it happens. <br />Almost convinced myself <br />‘It’s only a card, <br />Only sent out of duty, <br />(Probably) , <br />To sit on the shelf’, <br />But I fell at the first fence <br />Of fooling myself. <br /> <br />More hurtful things have happened <br />Yet I’ve always let go <br />Without them coming back and besieging me so. <br /> <br />This thing I thought <br />Would just be the same. <br /> <br />But it wasn’t to be. <br />How could I see <br />It coming, <br />(Or not coming, in this case) , <br />To me? <br /> <br />Cyberspace silent, <br />Telephony too. <br /> <br />Not a single <br />Word <br />To me from you.<br /><br />Tony Jolley<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-faller-at-the-first/
