When one is ill, he feels pain,
His limbs and heart begin to strain,
His mind is full of miserable grief,
His heart is thin and plain like a leaf,
His eyes are red and very sore,
Why Allah is doing this, he is not sure.
The reason behind the ache is wise,
Allah is measuring his Iman size,
Allah is testing for his Taqwa,
To find out whether he will get far,
With plenty of sabr will he survive,
Or with impatience will he strive?
The ill one should always keep in thought,
That this illness I have fought,
To build upon my faith in Islam,
And reassess my past Iman,
I’ve been benefited by my Lord,
This sort of pain I really can afford.
He should make himself realise,
That this pain just makes him more wise,
So long as he still depends on Allah,
And keeps his heart full of Taqwa,
And once he has overcome the illness,
He should seek Allah’s protection and forgiveness.

Rukhsar Ahmed

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/when-one-is-ill/
