Oh wonderful life <br /> <br />Where people shoot foxes from their dining tables <br />For fun, whilst devouring a dismembered carcass <br />TV dinners for the county set <br /> <br />Where pike pull young swans under the slick surface <br />and slip them down their slimy gullets <br />their eyes bulging as the liquid claims their lungs <br /> <br />Where girls shudder in the memory of their fathers <br />fumbled attentions in the darkness <br />his memory haunts her like shattered polaroids <br /> <br />Where humans are hung up like butchered carcasses <br />for fun, or lessons, or God <br />or no reason at all <br /> <br />Where herons spike the guts from perch <br />and flick their scales cascading through the light <br />before extinguishing their fire in their throats <br /> <br />Where we line up experiences like dominoes <br />and try to make sense of them all <br />and fail, as we always will <br /> <br />But we will always return to the raindrop <br />clinging to the furled leaf <br />trembling in the morning light <br /> <br />Sense the tears replying to the nameless joy <br />and will try one more time <br />to solve this shattered puzzle<br /><br />Anthony Dalby<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/wonderful-life-not-a-love-poem/
