Some micromanage, others multitask,
some focus on the details, others choose
horizons that are broader and don’t ask
an updat every minute of the news.
God doesn’t do the former, I believe,
but as we screw up He is watching while
the news He hears each minute makes Him grieve
because we micromanage without style,
and do not look beyond horizons where
Gestalt is more important than details
that He alone can comprehend, aware
the road to Nineveh is paved with whales,
a fact some still believe the prophet Jonah
once swallowed––how they love it in Pomona.

The last two lines of this poem are inspired by the line spoken by Joe Gilles (William Holden) to Nora Desmond (Gloria Swanson) after she describes how she wishes to act the part of Salome, dance the dance of the seven veils and kiss John the Baptist’s lips.

12/6/05,6/12/06

gershon hepner

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/road-to-nineveh/
