We danced our cares away by the yard light out back <br />Playing hide in go seek and mummy in the grave yard <br />While the fireflies were our captives <br />Held prisoner in a mason jar <br />Dreaming the night away as they flickered in our bedrooms till morning <br /> <br />After school we rode the banana seat Schwin’s down the big hill <br />(That does not look so big now) <br />A deck of playing cards or straws in the spokes <br />Click, click as we rode on by <br />Candy cigarettes in a box <br />Roll our sleeves up and act like James Dean <br />Playing red rover and double dutch till dad came home <br />Then out the door but be in the yard by dark <br /> <br />Playing the game of life take a spin <br />And you have twins <br />The dating game see who you had <br />A roll of the dice and prince charming was the one <br />See how high you could fly on the swings <br />Then twist around pinching your fingers in the chains <br />Round and round on the merry go <br />Till your head and stomach spun <br />Zagnut bars and penny candy <br />Bottle of coke was just our size <br /> <br />Trading the good ship lollipop for boys and dances <br />Friday night drive ins <br />And Saturday roller rinks <br />Prince charming never came like in the game <br />A job, then family and the good ship lollipop sailed away leaving us behind <br />But the memories remain <br />And soon the ship will hopefully sail again <br />If I pass on my boarding pass to my children’s children <br />And pull the plug on the video games<br /><br />Patricia Gale<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/on-the-good-ship-lollipop/
