We all sat round a table,
we were a motley crew,
WHAHAHA and 'Ain't it cute? '
and she and me and you.

WHAHAHA told a story,
it had us all in tears,
about some crazy, breaking in,
to steal his thousand fears.

'Ain't it...' not to be outdone
belaboured a fantasy,
in which she scattered fairy-dust
to set far oceans free.

We all partook the pleasure,
our palms spread to the fun,
like family round a camp-fire
when all is said, done.

Round and round we storied
till our tales were in a spin,
not feeling a chill was in the room
and darkness crowding in,

that goblins round the basket
were feeding on our crumbs
and bidding for the bestest,
a festivity of bums.

The highest of them joined us,
so smitten we were by then.
He dazzled us with mirrors
then slipped his easy pen

into the magic mirror,
slipped us an easy line...
about some rat saving some feline
by nibbling on the twine

caught choking round her collar:
NOBLE rodent, BLESSED cat...!
A thousand goblins snickered,
their wallets growing fat

while another awful presence
beyond the dear rainbow,
came summoning the best of us
into his awful glow...

No missing link to slow us,
we sipped the lazy wine.
Tall tales trumped each blessing
with a pixellated shine.

We piled story onto story,
his highness pulling strings.
The feeders grubbed, their masters
blackening shadows in the wings.

Our host sat bathed in honey
in which gold bees were snuffed,
gambling on a true, sad fire.
His guests were truly stuffed.

We'd sold our dreams, the sadness
possessed us, like a gun.
Only WHAHAHA and 'Ain't it cute? '
begged for another one.

John Garth Raubenheimer

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-fish-fled-the-scene/
