The poets are lost! The poets are lost!
Have we no Shakespeare, have we no Frost?

Who is the voice of the poets today?
Who now swings on birches by untrodden ways?

Where is the metaphor? Where is the rhyme?
Hesperus is sunk forever in Time.

The classics lie dead, nevermore read,
Roads not taken, Ozymandias dead.

Few stars rise anew to brighten the skies
Should one Whitman flare, a thousand Plaths die.

The poets are lost! The poets are lost!
No romantic Shakespeares, no down-to-earth Frosts.

The Muses have vanished – where have they gone?
We’re trapped in the Waste Land, no hope of dawn.

The seas of inspiration and wisdom lay dry.
Oh, weep for the poets as for Adonais!

The poets are lost! The poets are lost!
Shakespeare forgotten, and neglected lies Frost.

Sophia White

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-poets-are-lost/
