Jonzo Bandwagoner - To Her and Him

I remember, as a child,
She would stir our lemonade;
He would sit and tell us jokes,
Then hide our easter eggs.

I recall from early years,
They would laugh and smile and kiss;
He would hold her hand in step,
Then tickle us to tears.

And further on, in summer's wake,
She'd sprinkler us 'till dusk,
He would flex and say he's strong,
Then chase us 'round in fuss.

But I haven't seen her lemonade,
Nor heard his laughter lately;
Hands in pockets, painful tears,
They've given up, they've locked it.

Stupid, stupid world! I hate
Your wisdom, your unfaithfulness!
Why must they butcher, separate?
I wish he'd hold her, I wish she'd stay.

O Lord, my God, somehow, someway,
Heal hearts, mend roughs, scour doubts,
Show love.

I can seem them in my head,
A gray, old couple, flirting!
I'll stop by, they'll whisper softly,
The pain was worth it, surely.

Jonzo Bandwagoner

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/to-her-and-him/
