An Infant's Earliest Thoughts.

I know nought to think
I know nought to choose
I know nought of win
I know nought of lose.

The cord was quickly cut
my valves open and shut.
I felt purely alone –
just flesh and bone.

No warmth – no safety – just me.
What am I? – who am I? - I cannot see.
Instinct tells me to struggle – to survive.
I begin to breathe and hope to stay alive.

Sounds – all foreign – and so terrifying to me.
I understand not – my eyes beginning to see.
I smell Spring – I smell greyness and dankness.
I feel cold – I feel fear - an unknown strangeness.

Shapes and beings become familiar to me
Soon I recognize who my carer is going to be.
Loud voices, unhappy sounds, silences I dread,
- come to me - especially when I am in my bed.

I watch, listen to movements, from people to trees.
I feel the warmth of the summer night's breeze -
and the bite of the sharp, windy, winter's cold -
and still many more sensations – yet to unfold.

Colleen Wright.
