freedom many meanings has,
upon each soul depending;
but to my observation few have known her.
for all have seemed to fashion castles
of their own pretending;
in blatant obfuscation they disown her.

i see the prisoner's of wage,
with ties beneath their collars,
don three piece suits to climb the corporate ladders.
denying sense of loss or rage,
kowtowing to the dollars;
both family and leisure - lesser matters!

i see the righteous poor entrapt
in lowliest positions;
their livelyhood on slavery depending.
seems all society is captive.
similar conditions
govern every life unto it's ending.

but setting rent and wage aside,
as bondage shared in common;
since freedom, through such means, is not discovered.
and monks in mountain cells reside
and criminals in prisons,
who know it's deepest meaning like a lover!

then what is freedom? can she be
defined somehow, or measured?
tho wars are fought, to safeguard or insure her;
she yet remains a mystery
to most - a passing pleasure.
and rare the soul that's ventured to endure her.

for me, of all of freedom's meanings
only one thing matters;
that liberty and depth provide the passion
to savor all life's gleanings,
and if single soul be shattered,
to rise to her occasion, in my fashion.

moon batchelder

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/freedom-altho-not-in-free-verse/
