The candidates all wearing a Holy Ghost costume <br />And phony public servant’s smile <br />Stood on soapboxes just to reach the pulpit’s microphone <br />With their flawed ethics and concealed disabilities <br />Self evident <br />They promised to cut taxes with one hand and raise them with the other <br />Repeatedly trying to drive home the designated point <br />No one else could put an end to war…by saying… <br />Look at us we are the only ones who can walk on water <br />To which I respond, feeling so insignificantly humbled… <br />Imagine how powerful that must make them feel <br />I remember as a young man, <br />When in between flashbacks of suicidal tendencies <br />Brought on by the over use of drugged out paraphernalia <br />I used to inhale the thought of someday being King <br />Of anything <br />But I soon gave up that corrupted ambition <br />Upon reading the fine print <br />“I hereby swear to uphold”… <br /> <br />2007 © T Sheridan<br /><br />Ted Sheridan<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/conscientious-objector-2/
