Startled awake by a strange sound, <br />Lazily i sought out this strange sound, <br />Then my eyes found the source of the strange sound, <br />And i just stared in wide wonder. <br /> <br />On top of my dresser it stood, <br />Right next to the mirror it stood, <br />From nowhere it had come and it stood, <br />Living and breathing a pony. <br /> <br />It was a very little pony, <br />Quite a tubby little pony, <br />A very, very tiny pony, <br />Standing just three inches high. <br /> <br />It paraded around on the dresser, <br />Its hooves tap tapping the dresser, <br />Its nose nuzzling at the dresser, <br />It was clear that it wanted to eat. <br /> <br />A thimble i filled with cool water, <br />Some bread crumbs to accompany the water, <br />It supped and it drank of the water, <br />Until its appetite was sate. <br /> <br />Beautiful eyes had this pony, <br />A golden mane graced the neck of the pony, <br />As quick as the wind was this pony, <br />As it galloped around full of glee. <br /> <br />At this pony i stared and i gazed, <br />For hours and hours i gazed, <br />Until sleep overcame me i gazed, <br />And then in my dreams i cried. <br /> <br />When next i awake it’ll be gone, <br />I knew as i slept only gone, <br />Forever and always it’d be gone, <br />But i searched anyway in the morn. <br /> <br />And there where i left it the thimble, <br />Some crumbs all alone with the thimble, <br />No sign of the pony just the thimble, <br />But i smiled for I’d seen it last night.<br /><br />Christopher Thumwood<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/startled-awake/
