That cold January day in the Town Park in Millstreet <br />Has gone down in Duhallow history <br />When the Kanturk coursing greyhound Peadar's Prize <br />In the North Cork Cup final romped to victory. <br /> <br />Don't ask me his opponent in the final <br />Although I feel myself I ought to know <br />My memory at times is not the greatest <br />And that was many, many years ago. <br /> <br />Trained by James Manley a respected trainer <br />For coursing Peadar's Prize was not so choicely bred <br />But over two Winters he proved himself outstanding <br />And to the first turn of the hare was seldom led. <br /> <br />Duhallow had so many great track greyhounds <br />Who broke track records as they raced to fame <br />So many open class and big race winners <br />Too many far too many for to name. <br /> <br />But Duhallow did not have many great coursers <br />Though Mushera Shaggy and oaks finalist Greenfield I recall <br />And Peadar's prize who came many years later <br />Perhaps Duhallow's greatest courser of them all. <br /> <br />Famed coursing dogs from Kerry coursed in Millstreet <br />Greats such as Quiet Dandy and Wild July <br />And Peadar's Prize Duhallow's champion courser <br />To his connections brought moments of joy <br /> <br />And I still recall that January day in Millstreet <br />The wind blew chill and cold enough to snow <br />When Peadar's prize in the care of James Manley <br />Won the North Cork cup all of those years ago.<br /><br />Francis Duggan<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/peadar-s-prize/
