The dreams that have been
Were easier to believe
In the safety of the night
When they scattered themselves
Throughout my mind like pieces of light.
With them they carried promises deep within
Both the joyous and the tragic
As I sought the truth
They pursued me, beckoned, we’re no strangers
Knew they could always come in.
But didn’t ask if I knew the time
One dream led to another
And somehow I didn’t seem to mind
When they scattered themselves
Throughout my mind like pieces of light.
I found myself relaxed, sometimes tense
Here among the ghosts of my past, strangers in my future
And when I found myself venturing to close to the edge
Resorted to waking-up, ace up my sleeve
Time to gather-up my senses and my thoughts to ponder.
Yet back to sleep I would venture
In the forgiving world of the night
The surest place of all for dreams
When they scattered themselves
Throughout my mind like pieces of light.

'2007'

Robert Sheridan

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/pieces-of-light/
