'Tis said that his parents disowned him and he was a delinquent boy
And because of that many did suffer and because of that many did die
He will spend his life locked in a small cell where he cannot look up at the sky
But that of little use to his victims though many ask the question why?

He went and did something so awful and any remorse did not show
For his innocent victims who never had harmed him people he did not even know
Yet they do not understand that he himself is a victim a young man damaged beyond repair
How can he care about other people when he doesn't know how to care?

He feels the whole World is against him and cannot blame him for feeling that way
If he only had received a fair go he would not be where he is today
And his victims today would be living society such monsters create
How can one show love and affection who has been conditioned to hate?

You chain up a dog and mistreat him and that dog will become one to fear
And he will sink his teeth into somebody if to him they venture too near
And a mistreated human no different to the chained up dog in any way
Society creates every monster and the price is far too big to pay.

The murderer himself is a victim and he will die in his prison cell
But why should he fear eternal damnation when life for him is worse than hell?
A prisoner till the reaper claims him the moon and the stars he can't see
Yet had he known love and affection how different life for him might be?

Francis Duggan

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-victim/
