The ocean slips up and over my feet
Sinking them into the sand,
Washing away my foot prints
Leaving no trace that I was here.
I walk in further and shivers start sliding up my spine.
As the cool water absorbs me
Taking me in,
The silky wind brushes my neck,
And shifts through my hair,
Thrusting it in front of my face,
Blinding me for a second,
Putting a pause on my life.

And then someone somewhere pushes play
And my life starts again.
Making me wonder,
Would anyone care if I pressed stop on my life?
Would they notice that someone was missing from the world,
That a life had been cut out of the unyielding play of time?
Would they know it was me,
And if they did,
Would they even take the time to think about it,
To ponder what had happened?

As these thoughts dash through my head,
A wave overtakes me and pulls me under,
And I struggle violently to turn upright.
My hair wraps around my neck choking me,
As I make an immense effort to fill my chest with air,
Sand and water seal my mouth and rush into my lungs,
And I feel the bitter callused hands of death forcing me farther under
As the watery world around me starts turning black.

As scenes from my life fill my head,
I get a rapid burst of strength
And am able to propel myself upward.
As I burst through the ocean’s surface
I drag in mouthful after mouthful of oxygen
And my heartbeat starts to soften
No longer trying to rip through my chest.
When my pulse turns back to normal,
I glance around me again,
Noticing all the sounds and colors,
Taking in everything around me,
And realize I don’t want to find out.

angel lockheart

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/play-of-life-2/
