One final sip, the cup sits empty
Behind the bar, the bottle tempts me

You’ve had enough; the tender speaks
I’m still sober, my inside screams
Giving in I grab the bottle
Down my throat to fill my seams

My legs grow heavy, I hit the floor
Through the haze, I reach the door
The whiskey has made my body tire
My souls aflame, my heads on fire

Down the street I stagger more
Past the drunks and past the whores
In front of the Temple I stood
Remembering my childhood

In the sanctuary I begin to think
Is it devotion or just the drink
Whatever it is I hope it lasts
My heart yearns for my sober past

I kneel down, I feel a loss
My hands stretched out to shape the cross
Now I rise and stand before thee
Just a skeleton of the old me

Up to the altar I ascend
I promise now, my soul to mend
At the top I need to rest
My hand grasping my beating chest

No more to the demons am I a pawn
Pure thoughts with the rising dawn
Hopeful prayers, my soul to save
A new era, a new road to pave

Joey Mann

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-soul-to-save/
