Second hand were the rags she wore
One hand gloved the other wishes it were
Mismatched shoes only one has laces
Jacket dirty and torn it’s once pink only seen in traces
Curls that have lost their auburn shine
Eyes gray hardened grown colder with time
Pearly white teeth she no longer has
Beauty now faded her youthful years have come to pass

Trapped in her self made safe place
Who she had been gone without a trace
Every treasure she’s found stored in a basket with wheels
Walking cane used for protection against those who steal
She walks alone with her imagined family and friends
Weather she eats or not on strangers she depends
Day after day a vicious circle has become her life
Nigh after night she prays in her sleep to end this strife

Once a child that could light up a room
She’d never have guessed her in pending doom
Married to a man that chose a bottle over words
Two children with him a boy and a girl
A lot of yelling and to much broken glass
Late one night drove off an over pass
Servied a brain injury but will never again be the same
No one else lived but in her mind they remain

Her story in this life yes sad but true
Her memories some gone forever but the pain is real
She’s chosen to keep her children alive in her mind
It’s her safe place with them she hides
She’s hurt no one nor asked of you a thing
Yet you pass her by with a glance that sting
Never think this couldn’t happen to you or me
Life happens so fast one day you too could wake up on the street

By: PennyL.Poore 2008

Penny L.
