I was enchanted with the character of Chanda, the fearless and independent high profile escort from the movie DevD, the new age adaptation of Devdas by Anurag Kashyap. I placed myself in her shoes and wrote this poem from her perspective. Finally she has Dev in her life unlike in the earlier movies where the alcoholic lover dies.

My journey from socks to cigars,

Hybrid of the orient and the west.

An MMS scandal-lost honour,

A dead father-fearless candour,

Ruthless mother-made me wander.

My sojourn from elitist locales,

To Delhi’s high profile brothels.

Rejected by society,

Found a new world of fantasy,

From American school girl to a spoilt pansy,

Donned roles of variety.

In an alien world,

Everything sold,

Led life a bold.

Biking up with books,

All they wanted is my glances and looks.

Amid wigs, jigs and talking in tongues,

I saw a psychedelic Cupid without wings,

Snorting coke, drinking whisky,

Free, fanatic and frisky.

Lost in love was his fate,

I became his forbidden mate.

In passion he lost himself,

In him, I found myself..

Supriya Choudary

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/my-name-is-chanda/
