The ageless sweep of suns and stars
beyond the boundaries of time,
the universes, galaxies,
forever more the more we climb
with telescope and rocket blast-
these are too grand for simple rhyme,
much too complex and far too vast.

The ancient poets, musingly,
discovered gods within a rose;
now knowledge comes confusingly:
the more man learns the less he knows.

Perhaps when we come back to earth
with wisdom gained from farther than
even the farthest galaxy,
we shall find means at last to scan,
with ears that hear and eyes that see,
the awful mystery of Man

Daniel Artemas Harmon

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/gods-within-a-rose/
