I hear that my destiny has been written down,
my fate already decided,
then how do I stray from the path,
the right path?
How can I walk towards wrong,
when the steps are not mine really?
How can my hands become impure,
performing sinful deeds,
when they are not even in my control?
How can my eyes see what they should not?
How can my ears not shut away,
all I should not hear?
How can I think wrong thoughts?
How can I be punished,
for things I cannot control,
for deeds I am destined to perform,
for a mere puppet I am, really,
a strings-attached puppet,
being led through my life,
so how can I be punished,
for what is written in my fate?
Or is my fate not written down,
my life not already decided?
Maybe I get to write my own destiny,
but how do I know,
when I have been told otherwise,
who do I seek then,
to tell me the whole truth?
Clear the doubt,
wash away the uncertainty,
so at least I can be sure,
and know whether it’s my own fault or not,
when they tell me I’ll be punished,
for acting the way I do!

Mehreen Tahir

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/fate-or-not/
