Looking through the dirty mirror,
I see someone looking back,
I do not recognize the look of desperation
And depression in her eyes.

This is what the people close to my heart have done,
This is on their consciences’
This is what happens when you trust without questions,
You believe and take to heart what they have done,
Knowingly and unknowingly.

In my reflection I see tears,
Streaming down her face,
Yet my face is dry.
This mirror shows my inner feelings,
The self loathing, and desperation,
The need for love and attention.

“There is more hunger for love
and attention in this world than for bread”
this quote rings true,
I have a filled belly, and money,
Yet I do not have the one thing that makes a human happy:
Unconditional love.

Once I was happy, and confident,
Then personal tragedy struck,
And everyone thought I was ok,
They thought that if they ignored it,
It would go away and not affect us.
They did not hear us crying ourselves to sleep,
They did not see the fresh marks on our arms,
Or the blood running down our sides

They break us down instead of building us up,
We allow them to come close,
So that we can forever have the blackened knife in our backs.
You were supposed to love us,
Yet you left us out to die.

Rebecca Bekker

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/looking-through-the-dirty-mirror/
