Charmaine Sinclair - Please don't kill the Blowfish

I went for a walk today
river glimmering lights,
winds whispering, brushing by
It was such a nice day

I walked along the concrete edge
between the land and water
it was such a feeling
so great, so calm, I love.

There were little somethings
in my would-be path
and at first I could not see
for what they really were.

And not so far away, there,
a family of four, fishing, laughing, having fun,
they had my perfect day.
They were so near, so close, but oh, so unaware.

It was a massacre
of blowfish big and small,
hooked up by a flashing curve,
of cold, cold steel.

There was a crack between two slabs
crammed with half dead fish
I glanced away when i saw
the little lungs heave, painfully
for I could not get to them

Touched every one that I could reach
to see if they could live
and some when back in water
fled right away

but some drifted, waiting for,
their sun dried skin to soak
and some, waited for their death
white bellies stark white.

I remember there was a ditch,
with dirt, rubbish, and fish
have you ever seen a hole
filling up with dead?

And some were obviously gone
stuck right on the slab
I cringe to think what they had fared
in the salty wind and sun

My fingers, hands got slimy, slick,
as I kneeled on the ground
and I thank god it was not blood
that covered them.

I fear the casualness for it must have been
a leisurely entertainment
and for that, carelessly flung away
47 lives

Charmaine Sinclair

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/please-don-t-kill-the-blowfish/
